unknowns

evergreen trees dance
and wave below
the ladyfinger-like
branches of the unknowns
reaching so far into the
white-blanket canopy
vibrating as spindles

you saw me staring out
the window and
grabbed your drill
to add more screws
to anchor the pergola
to keep it grounded

as particulate droplets
almost invisible
shifted to soft tangible
snow and yes, my

arms grow new
unknowns, below
the wrist a stone
a brush stroke
on the elbow while

your beard grows
like it used to
and your arms
heat my body
like it used to
and the snow

falls like it used to
when we first
fell in love and
the branches would
crisscross above us
twitching like hands
of a watch to

make your mind
crazy to anchor
our bodies in place
on a blanket in
a metropark

stargazing
into each other
as if the world
could shake us
into place and
snap us whole
